Lynne Van Luven is a retired professor who volunteers with Dying With Dignity in Canada. She believes that medically assisted dying should be fully integrated into palliative care treatment options but says, “Not all palliative care administrators agree, so that integration is likely to happen slowly.” In Van Luven’s opinion, the legislation in Canada does not go far enough. Based on what she hears at Dying With Dignity presentations, she believes that many Canadians want to see the conditions of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias included in Bill C14 (Canada’s assisted-dying law). “It’s certainly a strongly held view among many… that we do not want to live beyond our mental competence.”
